Hi
Rotavirus is the commonest cause of acute diarrhea in infants and toddlers. Infection is acquired usually via feco oral route. It is usually a self-limiting illness within 3-5 days but persistent diarrhea due to secondary lactose intolerance is not uncommon.
The reason why your pediatrician has asked to stop milk and sugar based food like fruits is persistent diarrhea due to secondary lactose intolerance.
Ideally replenish the baby with oral rehydration therapy (ORS). Home based fluids like salted rice, butter milk or coconut water can also be temporarily used. If the baby is getting dehydrated immediately consult your pediatrician.
Wishing your baby quick recovery

Pediatrician Dr. Rajiv K Khandelwal's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

It takes some time for the stool to return to its normal consistency and frequency following a bout of infection. I suggest that you be patient and do not worry for 3-5 motions in a day. Increase the intake of fluids and food like curd, etc. In case the motions persist then it shall be better to get a routine examination of the stool done.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter an early recovery.

Regards,

Pediatrician Dr. Y V Siva Sankara Murty's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

If your baby is passing black colored stool then stool examination has to be done for occult blood. Altered blood could be one of the causes of black colored stool.

Your doctor stopped milk because in prolonged persistent diarrhea we think of secondary lactose intolerance.

Give a diet rich in calories to compensate for the weight loss that has occured. Give frequent meals.

Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
