Infant With Cough, Sneezing, Low Grade Fever. Not Able To Sleep. Mucus In The Throat. What To Do?

18 month old daughter been sick with cough, sneezing, drainage, on and off low grade fever, horrible mood. going on week 6 now, she is on two kinds of allergy meds, cough syrup, antibiodics, and recently stronger antibodics and/ a oral steriod. She is better but still sick. my problem now is i'm very worried she can't sleep or nap because her cough wakes her up. Now tonite she was so tired she fell asleep and is coughing/sneezing without waking up, and it sounds like she is gagging or trying to throw up. What can I do to help her. It sounds like she had a big amount of mucus in her throat that needs to come out but she can't get it out.

Thank you kindly,
Alabama mom

Hi,

Your daughter is suffering from Allergic rhinitis with Bronchitis.

She would in additional to medicines already prescribed a Bronchodilator to relieve her cough. This could be given in oral suspension form or through Nebulisation. Mostly this would relieve her cough.

As she is on oral steroid see to it that it is given after having eaten something otherwise it leads to gastritis and hence the nausea and vomiting.Get her re examined if her fever does not subside .

Bye

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

I can understand your concern. At the outset let me inform you that now you will observe your daughter to be getting repeated attacks of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) very frequently till the age of around 5-6 years as she is building her immunity. I would give her antibiotics only if it is indicated as most of the attacks of URTI are viral in nature. Hence kindly discuss with your doctor for the need for giving antibiotics and steroids before you discontinue them.

Kindly continue with a cough syrup and ensure she has a good wholesome diet so that her resistance improves.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter an early recovery.
