My mother is 79 years old has had 2 heart valve replacements, angina, high cholestrol, has a pacemaker, and is on rampiril, plavix, carvedoil, and crestor and after taking her pills she gets sick, lightheaded, naseau, with headache and the room spins. Should i space out her meds, she takes the crestor at night but during day she feels horrible and is bedridden after she takes her pills for several hours.

Hello,

A patient with so many problems should definitely take drugs. There are some things to check for potential problems. Carvedilol reduces the blood pressure and heart rate. Ramipril reduces the blood pressure. If she has low blood pressure when the symptoms occur then it's probably due to the pills and she should reduce the dosage (after consulting with her doctor). A low heart rate may also cause problems. We usually aim for 60 beats per minute when using carvedilol or similar drugs. If the heart rate drops to values lower than 50 per minute then symptoms may occur and the dosage might have to be reduced. Both ramipril and carvedilol can be substituted with other drugs if needed.

The other drugs may also cause dizziness, etc. Crestor can be substituted with another statin. Plavix is harder to replace.

If she doesn't have low blood pressure or heart rate then substituting the drugs one by one may help to identify the causative agent. Let her doctor decide the best plan though.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
