How Should Head Injury Bleeding, Knot And Infection Possibilities Be Treated?

my daughter fell off our bottom step this morning and hit her head on the end table. it bled a lot, as head wounds do, but she complains of no pain. it is not sunken in but neither is their a huge knot. it is about one cm in length. the bleeding has basically stopped. it is now 6:22am and it happened at 5:00am. i do not want to put her through any more pain than necessary. her behavior is oddly better than normal for the hour it is and how she had to wake up this morning. my major concern is head injuries i cannot see and infection. what can i do?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Nothing to worry - from the said history, chance of any significant head injury is less; just observe her for next 24 hours for any excessive drowsiness, repeated vomiting or abnormal shaking / posturing of limbs (seizure). If any such symptoms appear, take her to emergency without delay; if not, there is no head injury and nothing to worry.

To prevent infection, wash the area well with soap and water and apply Mupirocin ointment for 5 days. Giving paracetamol will help to relieve any pain

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
