How Serious Is Kidney Disease In A Person With Hypertension And High BMI?

My mother in law is 67 and weighs about 400 lbs. She has lymph-edema, hypertension, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis. Amazingly, she does not have diabetes, but she was told by a doctor that her kidneys are no longer functioning at 100%. We beg her to move around more and to alter her diet, but she is in total denial about her health and easily eats 4000 calories a day. Is there any advise you can offer? How dire is her situation? I don't anyone else her age who's BMI is as high as hers and were frightened of loosing her.

If she cannot reduce her dietary intake or reduce weight by willpower, the only option you have is to consider gastric bypass surgery. I adivse you visit a local hospital and visit a gastrosurgeon and discuss this possibility. The hypertension in the long run could damage her blood vessels and also worsen her kidney functioning status. So it has to be kept under control. Her kidney status needs to be periodically evaluated by checking her serum creatinine levels which you have not mentioned your question.
