How Can I Get Rid Of Smoking?

I have been smoking for the last 15 years. I smoke approximately 10 cigarettes a day. I have given up on smoking several times, however tend to get back into the habit after a gap of 15 to 30 days. The biggest temptation for me is the company of smokers or while socializing with friends on alcohol.
I think i should take some support for getting rid of this permanently. Is there some medication that i can take which will help me give this habit permanently.
I have an allergy to pain killer drugs such as brufen, dispirin, combiflam, etc. Paracetamol works fine for me
I am also worried of the side effects on stop smoking drugs
Please advice

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi,

Going by what you have mentioned you are definitely dependent on tobacco. Quitting smoking will need your complete dedication. Since you are not able to leave on your own, I would recommend you to consult a psychiatrist. Treatment for tobacco dependence will include behavioral treatment in which you will be taught relaxation exercises, and distraction measures to control craving for tobacco. You will also be required to control factors which are cues for smoking like alcohol, company of people who smoke, keeping cigarette with you, etc.

In addition, you can be offered nicotine substitution (nicotine gums, etc.) which will take care of the withdrawal symptoms and gradually will be tapered off. Other medications like bupropion and varnecline are also available which helps in reducing craving for tobacco.

All the best and happy quitting.
