History Of Hysterectomy. Have Hot Flashes. Taking Morphine For Breakthrough Pain. Reason?

I HAVE STARTED HAVING TERRIBLE HOT FLASHES AT 66 YRS. OF AGE. YEARS AGO I HAD A HYSTERECTOMY. I DON T UNDERSTAND THIS. I GET SOAKED WHEN THIS HAPPENS, MY HAIR, AND PERSPIRATION RUNS DOWN MY BACK AND THE FRONT OF ME. IT IS TERRIBLE. I AM ON PAIN MEDS THROUGH A PAIN CLINIC. LYRICA AND MORPHINE. I RECENTLY HAD IT DECREASED DRASTICALLY, BUT I SEEMED TO HANDLE IT VERY WELL. I HAD SLOW ACTING MORPHINE AND MORPHINE FOR BREAKTHROUGH PAIN, IMMEDIATE RELEASE. WHEN I FIRST HAD THESE SYMPTOMS, I THOUGHT IT WAS DUE TO THE DRASTIC REDUCTION IN MORPHINE AND LYRICA. I WAS ALLOWED 6 PILLS OF MORPHINE A DAY FOR THE BREAKTHROUGH PAIN. WHEN I TOOK ONE, IT SEEMED TO HELP THE HOT FLASHES TOO, SO I THOUGHT THE HF WERE FROM WITHDRAWL OF THE HIGHER DOSES OF MORPHINE. I WENT FROM 30MG 3TIMES A DAY TO 15MG. TWICE A DAY. THE LYRICA WAS 200MG 3TIMES A DAY CHANGED TO 75MG. 2TIMES A DAY. THEN I HAD 6 15MG PILLS of morphine I COULD TAKE A DAY, ONE AT A TIME EA. 4HRS. FOR BREAKTHROUGH PAIN. THIS WAS BACK IN AUGUST. BUT THEN MY DOCTOR DROPPED THOSE DOWN TO ONLY 1 15MG PILL A DAY FOR BREAKTHROUGH PAIN IN SEPT.. I HAVE BEEN ON THIS lower dose amount of slow acting morphineAMOUNT NOW SINCE AUGUST AND I HAVE BEEN ON THE 1 PILL A DAY FOR BREAKTHROUGH PAIN SINCE SEPT. I WOULDN T BE HAVING HOT FLASHES FROM WITHDRAWL THIS LONG WOULD I? MY PAIN DOCTOR FINALLY RAISED MY SLOW ACTING MORPHINE TO 30MG. TWICE A DAY AND LYRICA 75MG. 3TIMES A DAY. THAT DID HELP MY PAIN WHERE IT WAS MORE BEARABLE BUT I AM STILL HAVING THESE HORRENDOUS HOT FLASHES ABOUT TWICE A DAY AND IT HAS BEEN ABOUT A MONTH SINCE MY DOSES HAVE BEEN RAISED. I NEED HELP. THANK YOU.

Hello ma'am and welcome.

Hot flashes are due to menopause and not from withdrawal of pain medication. Treatment for hot flashes includes hormone replacement therapy and anti-depressants. If there are other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, etc; those symptoms are addressed with other medication.

Use the morphine only for the breakthrough pain ma'am and not to control your hot flashes, speak to your doctor about adequately controlling your hormone levels that are causing the hot flashes.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
