Had Heart Catherization, Blood Clot On Outside. What Is The Treatment And Concerns For A Blood Clot?

My brother-in-law had the heart catherization and went thru the wrist . They had to apply lots of pressure due to the bleeding . They are now saying there is a blood clot on the outside. What is the treatment and concerns for a blood clot on the outside - not sure I know what that means. He has been to the ER twice and the hospital where they performed the procedure found today and he will see the cardiologist tomorrow. Thank you!

Dear patient,

They may be referring to a clot in the radial artery or the vicinity, which is the vessel that was cannulated for access most likely. It is indeed a complication that can happen as part of the procedure; the main consequence can be closing off of that artery, but usually this is well tolerated since the artery that runs parallel to it provides collateral flow in the vast majority of people.
