Gaining Weight Continuously, Pain In Stomach, Not Pregnant. Cause And Cure?

Hi, my fiance has been putting on a lot of weight around her stomach (but nowhere else) to the point that she has gone up two dress sizes in the last few months. She eats well and is usually quite active but is now getting very tired in the day and regularly feels the need to take a nap. She has had irregular periods (the last period lasted 5 weeks and now she has not had a period for 6 weeks). She is getting slight pains in her stomach and been going for a wee a lot. We have been backwards and forwards to the GP over the last year trying to find out what is wrong but still no diagnosis... I am really concerned it is something serious (there is a history of cancer in her family) and doing a search online for a diagnosis for her symptoms seems to keep on pointing at Ovarian Cancer . She went for an ultrasound and the GP hasn t mentioned the possibility of cancer... it seems that every time we mention cancer, the GP dismisses this and tries to look for another answer by ordering another set of blood tests. She is 28 years old and a mother of 2 (one is 5 and the other is 7). They symptoms seemed to start soon after the birth of our second child but are getting worse and worse... we really just want a diagnosis to this problem so that whatever is wrong can be treated. She is getting the are you pregnant questions more and more and it is having a psychological impact on her life. We are due to get married in 3 weeks time and she doesnt fit into her wedding dress any more (she fitted into it 2 weeks ago - now it simply does not fit around the stomach area).

Hi,
This weight gain might be due to one of the two reasons. First is hypothyroidism & second polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCOS). Both can cause all the symptoms you described. For diagnosis you need to do TSH & one transvaginal scan.
In case of hypothyroidism, treatment is simple replacement of thyroxin & weight gain will reverse.
Regarding second thing, PCOS itself doesn't cause weight gain. But PCOS women are prone to gain weight it they don't practice healthy lifestyle. The easy to say but difficult to practice solution is to cut down all fats & sweets from diet, eat high fiber diet & do at least 30 minutes of sweat inducing exercise daily.
Hope this helps you.
Wish you good health.
