Fractured Tibia While Jumping Off Trampoline, Cast Removed But Leg Is Hyper Extended. What To Do?

my daughter, 12 years old, fractured her tibia jumping off a trampoline, we were in a long cast for 6 weeks, they removed the cast , put on a brace and told us to go home and make her walk on it, but her leg is hyper extended, and she cant get around without her crutches, what can be done for the hyper extention.

Hi there.

This sort of symptom is caused due to weak thigh muscles after prolonged casting.

Firstly I would like her to wear a knee hyperextension restrict brace which is a brace that extends to the thigh region spanning the knee. Use this while walking only.
This will prevent her knee from hyperextension while walking.

Remove this brace while sitting ang lying down.

Start on a physio program for strengthening her hamstring muscles.
The quadriceps muscles shouldn't be ignored too.

Removal of brace and return of muscle strength will be a gradual process which should be monitored regularly by your orthopedician.

I hope my advice has helped
Good luck
