Could The Infection In Mouth And Soreness In Tonsils And Throat Be Connected?

Hello, I m a 21 yr. old female, i live a pretty active life ( I have a toddler and an 80lb rottweiler.) I smoke half a pack a day ( had to cut down from a whole pack when I suffered a double fracture in my ankle. Tibia and Fibula- that happend the 13th of this month, april). I drink maybe two shots of alchohol in about a month or two. The double fracture was inverted (as I am pidgeon toed ). The doctor s perscribed me vicodin, no anti- inflam. for the reason that I will more than likely need a plate and a few screws to be fixed again. . It s been five days since I ve broken my ankle. I also had a serious abccess infection which I ve just let go for over a year (One in my mouth, that reoccures), this morning I woke up and even though that infection started on the right side of my mouth, the left side of my throat and tonsils are sore and swollen, I also have a stiff spot in my neck on the left side. What I want to know is if all of these things are connected on any level other than that they are all things with in my body? hah. thanks for your time.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history about having fractured tibia and fibula near ankle for which surgery is planned, have recurrent problems in mouth abscess on left side, left sided neck problem and pain on the right side of the tonsil area.

The problem looks to be a cyst on the left side of mouth as the abscess is recurrent and needs investigations and surgical correction if needed. The pain on the same side of neck is due to lymph node enlargement. The pain on the right side of tonsillar area may be due to the spread of infection from right side.

Hence I would advise you to get properly investigated, clinically evaluated so that a proper medical treatment with antibiotic, anti-inflammatory medicines and surgery if indicated. Once this is settled then only screw and plate treatment for the fractured bones will be done to avoid any infection in fractured area.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
