During Labour Had An Epidural. After Delivery Have Pain As Pins And Needles. What Are The Findings And Required Treatment?
Hello I was wondering if someone could help. 17 weeks ago I gave birth to my son. During my labour I had an epidural put in when I was 5cm dilated but at 8cm it no longer worked, no matter how much topping up of the medicine or moving the line in my back. Ever since giving birth I have been having a pins and needles sensation in my back but about 6 inches above from where my epidural was placed. I would like to know if this is normal? Why it is caused if anyone knows why?? And will it ever disappear?? Thank you Rebecca
Hi, Thanks for the query. Epidural anesthesia is usually used in labor for pain less delivery. Sometimes because of inadequate dosage etc, required level of anesthesia may not be achieved. Usually at the time of full dilation of cervix that is between 8 to 10 cms, maximum intensity of pain occurs. So epidural anesthesia with same dose of drug may not help at that time. Epidural anesthesia may lead to remote side effects like back ache, neurological problems etc in some women. But these are usually short lived and subside soon with out need of medication.
