Continue To Bleed After Sub Total Hysterectomy, Small Part Of Womb Attached To Cervix. Surgery Required ?
I had sub total hysterectomy nov last year and continue to bleed. Been back to consultant who explained this is due to the fact that a small part of womb which is attached to the cervix was not able to be removed and so this partof the womb continues to bleed, he further advised this happens in 5% of cases and normally they would cauterise to stop the bleeding but he can't even get a scope far enough into my cervix to have a good look let alone cauterise so this isn't an option. I've been put on mini pill for 4 months and due back t see him thereafter. Can't believe it's happening after going through the op. also worried if he couldn't get tiny scope in how can I have a smear test successfully carried out. I was so disgusted I left the consultants room with a million questions going round my head, what are my options now? Will he suggest another op to remove cervix?
Hello Thanks for your query. In subtotal hysterectomy, a stump of the uterus is left behind. THis is done when it is very difficult to proceed ahead and remove the remaining cervix too. It could be due to severe adhesions , fibrosis etc. As he is unable to cauterize the lesion, then yes, taking a satisfactory Pap smear also would be difficult. If the bleeding is severe, yes, you might require re - surgery to remove the cervical stump. Take care.
