Child Has Splint For Broken Finger. How Long Should It Remain Swollen?

Please advise, if an 8 yr old broke their pinky finger 20 days ago, should it still be swelled? Also she started with a cast that went right below her elbow because it is her pinky finger but then another doctor took it off and put a splint on just the 1 finger. The splint falls off quit a bit. Please advise. Should I tell her parents to take her back to the doctors for another xray? Also shouldn't she be icing it every night?

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

Swelling following an injury may remain for a varying period of time and should not be a cause of concern provided the healing is taking place. When the doctor removed the cast and put a splint then was an x-ray taken and what was the report?

There is no need of applying ice at this stage. If the splint keeps coming off then it needs to be replaced with a well fitting one to provide rest to the injured finger.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing the child an early recovery.
