Can One Be Treated For Schizophrenia With Haloperidol?

My brother is being treated for schizophrenia with haloperidol 2mg tablets and benzhexol 2mg tablets, both 3times/day. And he sleeps daily on the average of 16 - 17 hours. In addition to that he has a very bad body smell. He seems to a hear a voice fr somewhere asking him to commit suicide; which he did really once, and escaped. Currently he has come to stay with me for a month. He is not open either, talks very seldom, otherwise in sleeping. How can I help him? Need to get him to back to work as Roller Driver (road works). He is a 43 yr man of Indian origin. Known period of problem - about 3yrs, and on treatment for about 2yrs.

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

I understand that you are concerned about your brother who has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Haloperidol is an antipsychotic medication used to treat Schizophrenia and Benzhexol is a medication given to prevent the possible side effects of Haloperidol.

Now, fro your description that he is still hearing voices, is very withdrawn and has poor self care, it appears that his schizophrenic symptoms are still not fully controlled.

My opinion is that he needs an adjustment or change in his medication. There are better medication than Haloperidol which can be effective for such residual symptoms and that have lesser risk of side effects. So, I would advise you to take him to a psychiatrist for a review and further treatment.

Wish you all the best.
