Can Anyone Tell Me What Is Toxic Pregnancy?

A friend (really!) just told me that she has a "toxic pregnancy". This friend lives out of the country else I would make sure that she sees a reputable doctor. What is "toxic pregnancy"? it looks like a ... mythical term which covers generic pregnancy sickness? I am told that she is almost 4 months pregnant.

A toxic pregnancy is a pregnancy complicated by hypertension, impaired renal function and other complications like convulsions due to uncontrolled hypertension and increased maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity. 'Toxic pregnancy' was a broader and vague term used in the early days as it was thought to be caused by toxins. The exact cause of the hypertension of pregnancy is mostly unknown and the onset is usually observed as early as the 16th week of pregnancy. Proper monitoring by an experienced medical person is mandatory to ensure safe pregnancy and delivery and postnatal care. Take care.

That is an obsolete term.
Probably you mean Toxaemia of pregnancy? (pre-eclampsia / eclampsia) - pregnancy, complicated by blood pressure, protein in urine, swelling of legs, fits...
If she is a friend and you are concerned, you must bring her out of the 'country' and take her to a specialised Institution for further assessment and assistance / as soon as possible.
