Can Acoustic Neuroma Cause Moderate Hearing Loss?

My 5 year old daughter has hearing loss in her left ear. She was tested for hearing twice at school and showed moderate to severe loss in her left ear. She saw an audiologist today who confirmed the school test results and referred us to an ENT. (That appt is 3/4.) I m worried that this may be an acustic neuroma. She has had 3 episodes of strep throat and a sinus infection in the last 4 months. No complaints of ringing or dizziness or loss of balance. Otherwise she s a very healthy little girl.

Hi,

History of a hearing loss in one ear in a child of 5 years is very uncommon and hence should be investigated thoroughly before starting any knee jerk management. Hearing loss in a child has a lot of psychological bearing also. And may need a help of a counselor along with management of hearing loss.


Before we say about acoustic neuroma let you get her see an audiologist again to have all investigations, consult an ENT surgeon who deals with pediatric ear problems and particularly hearing loss for clinical evaluation and get remaining investigations like combo-study that is CT scan and MRI of mastoids, and brain to see for any obvious cause. Hearing aid and other management will be as per the findings and may need surgery in case of Acoustic Neuroma.
