General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi John,

There is a high probability of inflammation occurring in the knuckle area. It could be due to a thorn prick, pollen allergen, or any kind of unnoticed trauma.

The inflammation will subside in a couple of days. She has to apply ice to the affected areas thrice daily for next 2 days.

There is a lesser probability of having a torn tendon of the small muscles of the hands or even a hairline crack in the hand bone.

Observe for 2 days, if the swelling and the purple color does not subside, then an x-ray of the joint will be required.

Wish your wife quick recovery.

Regards,
