Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Feb 2014

From description, it seems soft tissue injury or ligament injury at the hip joint. This is an important joint and the healing is really bad if prompt opinion not taken from the expert. You may need important investigations like Xray and MRI of the joint.

I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination.

Meanwhile I advice you but do not rely on these home care treatment without specialist's consult:
Hot fometation to the affected area.
Avoid putting weight and rest well.
You can take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce inflammation and pain under supervision of your treating doctor.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.

General & Family Physician Dr. Ramesh M.Vachharajani's  Response
There might be heavy muscle strain due to hard hit.
But as you heard a cracking sound, it is better to got for x-ray spines.
If you are elderly then definitely go for x-ray as at this age even a simple injury can cause fracture or vertebral damage.
Take some analgesic tablets for 2-3 days.
Apply muscle relaxant cream locally.
Give rest to the part.
Ok and take care.
