54 Year Old, Diagnosed With Calcaneal Valgus. Suggested Surgery. Recuperation Period? Is Orthotics A Better Solution?

I am a 54 year year old post-menopausal female (height 5'6", weight 250 lbs.) and have been diagnosed with calcaneal valgus (flat foot). Surgery was mentioned as an option. I saw the diagrams associated with the surgery, and it does not look pretty! Could you please tell me what the recuperation period is, and what kind of rehab is to be expected? Would orthotics (inlays, braces) be the better solution? Thank you!

Hi and thanks for the query,

Generally, orthotic correction especially at this age would likely not be successful. Surgery remains the major remaining proven option. The recuperation period should normally range between 3 to 4 months. Success rates when done by an experienced orthopedic surgeon are generally encouraging. Thanks and kind regards,

Bain LE, MD.
