What is the remedy for constipation in pregnancy?

My wife is pregnant and she says it feels like she has to pass her bowels but can't. When she goes to the bathroom she says its about to come out but it feels like something is stoping it. She has been like this for about two days what should we do. This is her first pregnacy

Let me first congratulate you on your expected first baby.
Your wife is probably having constipation which is commonly seen during pregnancy.
The reason can be due to
1-Compression of the lower bowel(lower part of intestine)by the uterus or presenting part of fetus depending on the weeks of pregnancy,
2-Haemorrhoids(varicosities of rectal veins) which is also seen during pregnancy.
For easy passage of stools you can give her Milk of magnesia or Lactulose after discussing with her Gynaecologist.
To prevent these problems in future she should:-
a-Take plenty of fluids,
b-She should take diet XXXXXXX in fibers like XXXXXXX leafy vegetables,fruits etc.
