Posted on Wed, 17 Aug 2016
Question: Hello Doctors,

Again another question regarding my HIV status. I had protected sex last year and early this year. But concerned of having HIV. I tested four times (latest in june) alere combo test and it came as negative. But I have read article that there could be chance that anti bodies will not generate for few people even after years. I have taken steroids in late 2013 for my skin problem and a tappering dose in Feb 2016 for three weeks. I have mild oral thrush in back end of my tongue and getting burping even after drinking water. So will I be a case of where anti bodies are not generated, kindly suggest?

Brief Answer:
Negligible chances of HIV infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I have diligently gone through your query and noted your concern.

Let me guide you first that there is no effect of steroids taken in your course of testing. Both the times these were taken quite a part from the testing time. The first one in 2013 has no correlation at all while the latest one in February 2016 also has got no influence on the result of the test.

In your case it was a protected intercourse do the chances of HIV are nil. Even then the confirmation is given by the latest test done in XXXXXXX this year. Any HIV combo test done 3 months after the exposure is confirmatory. This is because of the fact that HIV antibodies develop within few weeks of its exposure.

The symptoms of oral thrush and burping are non specific.

I reassure you fully that there are negligible or frankly saying no chance of HIV infection.

I hope this helps.
