Posted on Mon, 14 Nov 2016
Question: i got tested for sgpt and sgot and the levels were 78 and 62.and i went to a doctor and i was given liverol forte medicine will it decrease my sgpt and sgot levels.and according to the sgpt and sgot report is this a serious issue
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Happykumar Kagathara (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
This is just mild elevation of SGPT and SGOT

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr XXXXXXX
1) I would like to know about your complete liver function test (LFT), your diet habbit, habbit for alcohol intake, hepatitis-B and hepatitis-C virus status, USG abdomen if done.
2) Purpose to ask is, if you have liver disease where bilirubin is above normal value along with elevated SGPT and SGOT, then Liverol forte might have beneficial liver protective effect.
3) Values of SGPT and SGOT, mentioned by you are not that much elevated that particular medication would be required for that. But yes, without knowing full history, liver function test it is not advisable to comment about beneficial role of this medication.
4) Generally when value of SGPT and SGOT increase three-fold than normal value then it require medical attention. Elevated value suggest that liver cells has high work load, either due to more raw material to work or due to decreased function of liver cells

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help

Answered by Dr. Dr. Happykumar Kagathara (6 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Not sure to continue medicine based on reports

Detailed Answer:
Well,
After seeing your complete report, I am not sure whether Liverol forte has any protective role.
But yes you need few precaution to get it worsened
1) reduce fat (lipid, oil) content in diet
2) Take carbohydrate rich (sugar) diet, providing that you are not a patient of diabetes.
3) Do regular mild or moderate exercise

I also suggest when you do follow-up blood test after some time, add lipid profile test (for blood cholesterol) in that

Hello,

Brief Answer:
Enzymes are only mildly elevated and you can continue medication

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

1) Of course there is no harm in continuing this medication.
2) I agree your SGPT and SGOT are not normal. But they are only mildly affected that it can not be considered as significant as to consider for initiation of any particular medical treatment.

Brief Answer:
You must stop alcohol

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I apologize for late reply
If you have history of alcohol drinking associated with these findings then YES you must stop it. Because once liver start getting damages from alcohol then such damages are irreversible. You also need medications to control symptoms and to slow progression of disease.

today again i went for the sgpt and sgot test and the sgpt was 75 and sgot was 42.and i went for the hcv rapid,ag card test forhepatitis b and c and the report was non reactive.now suggest me what can be the cause of increase of sgpt
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Happykumar Kagathara (2 hours later)
Brief Answer:
No need for so frequent and so many blood tests

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
First of all there was no need to undergo tests for hepatitis.
Even if you consume alcohol slight in higher amount or if your diet has more of lipid then these minimal elevation would be there, but these values are insignificant to consider as damage on liver or to start any treatment.
As a precaution just take care not to take alcohol much and to reduce fat-enriched food in diet (oil, ghee, butter).
There is no need to worry too much or to do so frequent blood tests for these values of SGPT and SGOT.

sir in your opinion the hcv rapid ag card test give the correct report .because when i gave my blood samples just after 2to 3hrs they gave me the report for hepatitis by handovering the two cards claiming that test is non reactive.test for hepatitis by
rapid test kit .is this test satisfactory
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Happykumar Kagathara (4 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Rapid test is satisfactory and first test to do

Detailed Answer:
Yes, rapid card test for HCV antibody is very sensitive and it is recommended to use as a first test. If this test comes positive then only RNA test for hepatitis-C virus is recommended.

Brief Answer:
Check for vitamin levels

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
1) Your symptom of fatigue is not associated with SGPT, SGOT issue.
2) Most common cause for it is vitamin deficiencies and therefore it is recommended to check Vit-D and Vit-B12 level along with next scheduled blood investigation.
3) Also hydration status of body is contribute to this issue, you should maintain hydration by drinking minimum 2 lit of fluid (water, juice etc.) per day.

Brief Answer:
Vitamin-D level is slightly low. Test for vitamin-B12

Detailed Answer:
1) EEG test is to detect abnormal brain electrical activity. It has no concern with your present symptom of fatigue
2) Habit of drinking 2-3 lit of water daily is good
3) Vit-D level is slightly on lower side (20-50 ng/ml). You should take one intramuscular injection of vitamin-D supplement
4) In addition, you should check Vitamin-B12 level.

doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Happykumar Kagathara (3 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Check for vitamin-B12 and electrolytes

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
1) Marginal deficiency of vitamin-D is not specific cause for fatigue, but yes vitamin deficiency is associated with generalised tiredness, lethargy
2) If you have not done electrolytes tests then along with Vitamin-B12, I recommend to do serum Calcium, Sodium, Potassium (If not done in past 2-3 months).
3) Your symptom of fatigue is minor and generalized symptom to such vitamin deficiency or electrolyte imbalance.

It must be generalised symptom rather than any correlation with any specific condition.
In case you planning blood investigations to be done, it is advisable to add vitamin-B12 test in that

Brief Answer:
This elevation is acceptable

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I apologize for late reply
1) This minor fluctuation is value is within acceptable range. There is no need to worry for such minor changes unless you have symptoms of abdominal pain, jaundice, nausea.
2) SGPT and SGOT increase suggest increase load on liver tissue for metabolism and it might occur from consumption of alcohol, fat-enriched diet, excessive high dose of pain killers.
3) But as I mentioned increase of SGPT from 75 to 90 is acceptable (upto 100-120) and SGOT is near normal 42 and 41

doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Happykumar Kagathara (30 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Yes you can take medicine but its role would be questionable

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I apologize for late reply.
1) Yes you can take medicine to lower down SGPT level, but its role for such marginally elevated SGPT level is doubtful. Instead I suggest to start with diet modification first, i.e. protein rich diet, carbohydrate rich diet (provided you do not have diabetes), low fat containing diet, use of omega-3 fatty acid containing oil for food preparation

Brief Answer:
Nominal evelation in liver enzyme does not need medicine

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
1) Iis role of questionable because for such nominal evelation in liver enzymes does not warrant strict need for medicine support. And even if you taking medicine, it will not harm to your digestive system
