default
Posted on Mon, 14 Nov 2016
Question: Hello. My last period was Sept 16. On Oct 9 I had a few minutes long pink bleeding. Until today I didn't get my period only to experience yesterday few drops of dark brown blood. I had nausea, dizziness but home pregnancy tests come negative. I feel bloated a bit and went to see a doctor today but she said wait for few days. I am getting nervous and not sure what to wait for.
Could I still be pregnant?

Brief Answer:
If your pregnancy test is negative, then it is unlikely you are pregnant

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Pregnancy symptoms vary widely between women, and many of the same symptoms we commonly associate with pregnancy such as nausea, bloating, breast tenderness, headaches and irregular bleeding can also happen from an irregular menstrual cycle as well as pregnancy. Furthermore, modern urine pregnancy tests are extremely accurate and become positive even 10 days after conception, so if your tests are negative, you are not pregnant. So the reason you have these symptoms is that irregular hormonal cycles can cause side effects that can be mistaken for pregnancy symptoms, and some women occasionally bleed when they ovulate (about 2 weeks into their cycle)

The only other possibility is that you recently conceived (within the last 10 days) and not enough time has gone by to have a positive pregnancy test. That is the reason why your doctor encouraged you to retest in a few days. If you had unprotected intercourse within the last 10 days, theoretically you could have conceived, however the fact that you had any bleeding around the time your period was due and that you had a negative pregnancy test makes this unlikley.

Women can have an irregular manstrual cycle for a number or reasons, including weight gain or loss, travel, stress (including the stress of worrying about pregnancy) as well as medical conditions like diabetes and thyroid disease.

So in summary- it is extremely unlikely that you are pregnant, but retesting in a few days time may provide additional reassurance.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful. If you need anything further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,
