What Diet Should Be Followed When Suffering From Diverticulits?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: I have diverticulits and want to know what foods should I try to help heal this problem. I am also can not eat any milk products. Seems like after 6 days if this is just a virus, that I would feel better. But really bad head aches an dizzy spell if I move quick. No cold at this time no fever.
How long before I get an answer.
Last Saturday I ate products that I know I shouldnt have. Cheesy pototes and right away I was ill on Sunday. Yes I did spend time in the toilet then. Not now.
They also did a urine culture and that was ok on Tuesday.

Detailed Answer:
Dear patient,

Thanks for the query. During the acute phase of diverticulitis, a clear liquid diet is mainstay: fruit juices, frozen pops, and water.

Once an acute episode has resolved, efforts should focus on increasing the fiber content in the diet: whole grains, fruits, vegetables and beans. The more colors in your plate the better.

Additional Metamucil fiber can help. If there is an element of occasional constipation, prune juice is ideal.

Avoid fatty, poly-saturated fried food such as fast food meals.

Hope this helps, wish you the best,

With my problem, I havent eaten beans or corn for many years. I also have tried to watch all berries.
You did not tell me what would cause my Neutrophis would be so low when they tested me on Tuesday.
Fiber like Metamucil is a good idea. I have done that before. Do you think that having Cranberry/Rasberry juice mixed with water is ok. I have been drinking that twice a day as I had a round a while back with bladder infection. When at the doctors office last tuesday that was fine. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
No worries about neutrophils

Detailed Answer:
White blood cells, neutrophils, eosinophils lymphocytes etc have an expected "range of normal"; if there is a relative increase in one of the cell lines, for example during a simple viral infection like a cold, or a stressful event, lymphocytes can increase in percentage while neutrophils decrease, usually not a problem if other cell lines like platelets and hemoglobin are normal.

The cranberry mix seems like a great idea, there is some data that it helps with repeated urinary infections.

Hope this helps clarify, wish you the best

This today is the 7th day of my not feeling normal. I am drinking a lot of fluids and eating rather bland foods. I must still have an infection as I still have the headaches. I feel better than i did early in the week but still not up to par.
I am the caretaker of a 92 year old husband who requires much care. So I do not have time to be unhealthy.
Thank you for your help. Hoping headaches go away more than when I take the Aleve. It just takes the edge of of them it seems.

Brief Answer:
Still reasonable to feel below par

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up Ms XXXXXXX Indeed, diverticulitis is not to be taken lightly, as full recovery may take even 2-3 weeks for some patients to feel back to baseline. However, I am confident that you will feel better as days go by and you make some dietary changes.

Wish you and your husband a Happy Labor Day!
