What Causes Sudden Loss Of Memory While Treating UTI?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 May 2016
Question: I recently was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, but the only symptom I had was a sudden (and lingering) loss of memory. I successfully completed a round of antibiotics, but the memory loss has persisted.

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

It is possible that a urinary tract infection can affect memory and mental clarity. This will usually improve after the infection is treated.

Since you were still having difficulty with your memory I would suggest that you talk about this with your primary care doctor. You might need some additional testing including a neurology evaluation or possibly imaging of the brain. But it's not laboratory testing they be helpful as well.

Again since were still having symptoms after the treatment of the infection I think you should review this with your doctor to try to find out if there is some other contributing factor that is affecting your memory.

Sincerely,

I did have an MRI which revealed that I had not had a stroke. That was a relief since there is a strong paternal history of strokes. I am confident enough to drive again-most of the time, but I suddenly will forget how to do things in the house, or where to find items, esp. in kitchen.

So you think I should request some additional answers from my primary care dr.?

Followup

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

Yes I would Followup with the PCP for further assessment. Maybe a check of B12 level and thyroid function would be reasonable. If all appears normal then a neuropsychological evaluation may provide some answers.
