What Causes Sharp Pain In Right Side Of Abdomen And Back?

default
Posted on Wed, 12 Nov 2014
Question: Been seeing internist for 3 weeks for really bad pain in my right abdomen and right back. The abdominal pain is sharp, cramping, comes and goes and the back pain is constant and burning, pain wakes me up every night and the daytime pain is keeping me from doing the things I need to do. Advil, tylenol, percocet, tums, zantac, ice, heat, none help. Usually healthy, but history of migraine h/a, kidney stones, right hydronephrosis, cysts, but this pain is different than stones. CT with and without contrast on Mon. showed mild diverticulosis, anatomic abnormal shape/size pancreas, small stones, but nothing to explain the pain. (also have a "mirrored" aortic arch.) CBC, Chemistry, in office on Mon. showed an WBC in the 20's, everything else normal, incl. lipase. Repeat lab on Tuesday completely normal, including WBC. BP is running 155/80, even when not uncomfortable, (I'm usually 105/60) Urinalysis is normal. Current plan to see urologist, then GI Doc., but last colonoscopy, normal, was in Feb. 2013. Saw OBGYN yesterday, she said the pain isn't female-related. No GI symptoms, no nausea, no vomiting, no heartburn, normal unchanged BMs.Three questions:
1. Any ideas for non-narcotic pain relief? Nothing has helped, and frankly I have kids and need to drive them around.
2. Do I really need to see all these specialists and are these the right ones in the right order?
3. I've been a smoker for about 30 years. Is there any chance this pain could be referred from my lungs? (I do peel a pulse of pain in front and back shortly after a deep breath.) I can't recall the last time I had any imaging done of my lungs.

Brief Answer:
Try Pregabalin.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic .

First let me list the possible conditions that can cause your problems.

1. Kidney Stones ( Yes I consider this first )
2. Stones in Gall Bladder.
3. Lumbar Radiculopathy.
4. Appendix Inflammation.

Now coming to your query you have mentioned that CT scan showed Stones , but not mentioned where were the stones found . In Kidney or Gall Bladder ? What were the size of stones ? Kindly let me know .

As per your pain relief , since you opted for non narcotic , I advise you to try Pregabalin . Keep taking this medicine every night , it takes at least 2 weeks to show some significant effects but keep taking it .

I don't think you need to consult a GI doctor unless the stones seen in the CT are in Gall Bladder. First consult Urologist and let's see what he advises . Also start taking the medicine I advised .

Any clarification feel free to ask .
Pleasure to be of some help to you.

Regards
