What Causes Severe Back Pain After Surgical Removal Of Abdominal Adhesions?

default
Posted on Wed, 19 Apr 2017
Question: Hello. I have had adhesions for several years after 3 c sections. I have had a total of 7 stomach surgeries. That last surgery was laproscopic to remove adhesions that had attached to organs. I see that you might be able to see them on an x-ray but my doc said that the only way to really see them is by another surgery. Is this true? I have severe back pain right now and some stomach pain. Is it possible that my adhesions have somehow affected my back? I do have compressed discs as well. Those showed up on an x ray.

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood your concerns.
The Adhesions can be known by the following tests:
- X-ray of the abdomen in the standing position: shows fluid-air levels.
- Contrast enhanced CT scan of the abdomen.
- Enteroclysis under fluoroscopy.
These are minimal invasive procedures.
Another surgery is a fully invasive procedure and any or all of the procedures can tell for sure whether there is still any intestinal obstruction or not.
Back pain in intestinal problems is possible only if there is acute obstruction or colon is also involved.
You already have compressed discs: these are seen on the X-ray as reduced inter-vertebral spaces. MRI is the best investigations and the correlation between the clinical evaluation, examination and investigations alone can tell the cause of the pain in the back.

I hope this answers your queries.
