Brief Answer:
Need to be worked up by Neurologist

Detailed Answer:
Good afternoon. Thank you for your question.

Since you haven't told me anything about the episodes in terms of how long these spasms last or what seems to trigger them and whether or not you are alert and oriented during the time they are occurring then, it is very difficult to "guess" exactly what's going on.

I would recommend that you be worked up by a neurologist who will likely start with an EEG of the brain and possibly put you in for a video recording either to the hospital or set you up to do recording while at home. Metabolically, there are several things that need to be checked such as electrolytes and thyroid function studies in order to be sure that it's not a treatable physical or chemical ailment.

You may also need an EMG/NCV (electrical study of the muscles with nerve conductions) study in order to tell what the irritability factor is of your muscles.

I would also recommend an MRI of the brain with gadolinium contrast (get your kidneys checked first using an EGFR and CREATININE in serum to be sure your kidneys are in good working order for the XXXXXXX

If you are having these episodes every night then, your boyfriend could set up a camera in your bedroom and see what shows up on film the next day.
