What Causes Recurring Lightheadness?

default
Posted on Sat, 7 Jun 2014
Question: I have been having ongoing lightheadness for nearly three years now, I have had numous blood tests, CT and MRI scans and seen a nurologist all have come back fine....

I do alot of computer work and suffer with neck pain due to this but CT and MRI came back finding nothing but normal aging of the neck and spin and some minor bone spurs.

with my lightheartedness it is constant all day, every day sometimes its just like foggy feeling where I feel really tired and a bit woozy other times I nearly faint its a strange and annoying. its start to stop me from wanting to go out to events due to how I feel.

latest blood tests (after I insisted) was allergy testing it came back highly allergic to dust mites and pollen am having further tests to be more involved but in the mean time could this be the cause of all my problems could it also still be neck and what are suggestions for treating the allergies and any other suggestions on what could be causing my lightheadness I am sooooo over it....

Brief Answer:
Allergy may or may not be related...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concern; it definitely has to be bothersome.

Based on the details your provided, I don't think it has anything to do with the neck pain, the ear or the even the brain. Light headedness from those conditions are usually position related. Symptoms are triggered / aggravated with change of head position. This constant light headedness might be due to other reasons. I would like to suggest a few conditions such as:

1. Yes, recurring allergies can cause the lightheadedness and the low / foggy feeling. It would be difficult to figure out the cause of allergies or it's treatment. In such cases, I choose to treat my patients according to their experiences with allergens. If there are no clinical symptoms of allergies, I would start multivitamin pills. However some of my patients with unidentifiable / untreatable allergies explored other wholistic treatments including ayurveda with good success. You might try it if the current doctors have no answers to treat allergic condition.

2. The constant lightheadness and feeling low may be due to systemic conditions such as anemia, vitamin deficiencies, fluid and electrolyte disturbances. Possibility of hormonal changes including perimenopause should be excluded. I am not sure if you have been investigated for these. If not, please discuss with your treating doctor.

3. Lightheadedness can also arise from a heart illness. I would not rate this possibility first since you don't seem to have other associated complaints. Generally there is accompanying fatigue, palpitation, breathing difficulty and even chest pain with the light headedness.

4. Lastly, when no other causes are found, these complaints may be somatic secondary to depressive / psychological factors.

Without a means to physically examine you in person, I am unable to give you a clear personalised opinion. But as a short summary, I would press for further testing - blood sugar reassessment, vitamin b12, vitamin D, serum electrolytes, liver function, thyroid hormones, hemoglobin along with basic check up of your heart. These test can be conducted as you get the allergy part treated. If none of these explains your symptoms, perhaps a visit to a psychiatrist is worthwhile.

Hope this helps you. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Brief Answer:
Correct the deficiencies...

Detailed Answer:
Apologies for the late reply....

Pleased to know that most of the tests are within normal limits. However those that are low including borderline B12 needs to be corrected in patients who have constant fatigue and light headedness.

At the moment I remember only protein/albumin, creatinine, catecholamine and its by product checked with a 24 hour urine sample. I am not sure if they are related to your current problem. You can wait for the results and discuss with your doctors.

Now, based on the symptoms and investigations performed yet, it all seems to be arising from constant allergies. You can try antihistamines, steroids and even desensitization procedures for sometime. But if you are not satisfied with the results you may want to explore the alternatives such as wholistic medicine, ayurveda or homeopathy just like few of my patients did. Add moderate physical exercises, yoga and meditation - these also help in the long run.

I understand the light headedness and fatigue is bothering you. Many a times such problems are the results of multiple minor (not sinister) complaints. Your doctors may also consider the possibility of chronic fatigue if there are no other explanations. I inform my patients to be patient and treat one at a time. I would start treating the allergies and borderline deficiencies; encourage you to drink more fluids; eat good fruits and green leafy vegetables; start yoga and exercise; and continue to sleep well.

Hope this answers your question. Let me know if you need clarifications.

I have started taking antihistime no change, and also vitiam B supplement no change... now wondering if it could be mangnesium deficiency. I got some magnesium oil from my massage lady today and i do have some tablets in the cupboard so it might be worth a try if it is how long should it take to work

Brief Answer:
Supplements help only when there is deficiency...

Detailed Answer:
Apologies for the late reply...

Magnesium supplement may or may not help. If there is a proven magnesium deficiency, you can start magnesium supplements. Since I could not review your past reports, I suggest you discuss with your primary care provider before starting magnesium supplementation.

As I mentioned in my previous mail many a times the cause of broad complaints such as yours are multifaceted. Most of the tests done ruled out serious organic pathology. Antiallergic medications only help during allergic manifestation. If there are no acute allergic complaints now, antihistamine and steroid use is not the immediate requirement. It would defintely help during acute allergic crisis.

In a summary, I am fairly sure your symptoms are due to multiple factors. You might need to treat it individually. Start your treatment with understanding the allergy. As I mentioned earlier, improved diet, yoga, physical exercise and meditation help to some extent. You can also explore alternative medicines if it's possible.
Consider the effects of perimenopause and somatic causes too. Discuss with your gynecologist and psychiatrist to know more about those.

Hope I am clear to you.

I agree that it is multifacted. I am also quiet tried and have some breathing issues.
my allergy testing came back highly allergic to Paspalum and couch grass and house dust mites, Mild allergy to rye grass so I am thinking the breathing problems and maybe part of the lightheadness could be related to this... any ideas on best way to treat these allergies. I cant do any physical excerise due to the lightheadness. I already do meditation.

Brief Answer:
Try alternative medical therapies...

Detailed Answer:
Allergy and body sensitivity is influenced by genetic frame work. Something that cannot be changed using the current available treatment. There are research going on if we can modify those, but they are still in nascent stages.
However as I said in the beginning some of my patients explored alternative therapies; few came back to me reporting excellent results. You might want to consider those to treat multiple allergies.

I suggest avoiding specific allergens and plenty of fruits/vegetables.

The bottom line is all your complaints can be treated eventually. Remain positive. You can explore the various options I mentioned. One of those will help you get back to good health.

Hope I have addressed all your queries. Please close this discussion if all your questions are answered.
