What Causes Purple Bruising On Lower Back Of Legs?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Dec 2014
Question: Hi, my name is XXXX, and I am a 28 year old female who has been having purple bruising on the lower back of both of my legs for over 8 months now and they won't go away. Last year in Nov. I went to New Orleans for the weekend and when i came back home my feet and ankles started to swell so bad until i couldn't walk on it because it was so big and it hurted for anybody to touch it. Eventually it went away, but everysince then bruises started to appear on my legs and it just won't go away. I was never injured or anything and from time to time my feet and ankels swell up again if i am standing up for to long. I went to see a doctor and they said that i was fine, but i don't think that is the case at all. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism when i was 6 years old, I stopped taking the medicine when i was about 20 years old and has not been taking the synthroid medicine since. I recently went to the emergency room a couple of years ago and the nurse practitioner says that my tch count was normal and that i didn't have thyroid problems. I don't drink water, but i do drink juice and at night I always have to pee at least 5 or 6 times before i go to bed and sometimes when i go to pee, i only pee like two or three drops and that is it. I don't know what to do anymore because i know something is wrong, i just don't know what.

Brief Answer:
Can be infection of superficial veins(Phlebitis) .

Hello
Thanks for your query.based on the history and facts that you have posted it appears that you had developed deep vein thrombosis giving rise tp pain and swelling of the both the legs which has subsided abut the superficial veins are still infected giving purple coloured bruising over back of teh legs.

Please consult qualified General Surgeon for clinical assessment and get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis.
1) Haemogram
2) Thyroid hormone study.
3) Colour Doppler study of both the legs,
4)Urine routine and urine culture.

The urinary symptoms that you have could be due to UTI ..

Start taking Cefexime and Nitrfurantoin twice daily along with urinary anti spasmodics like Flavoxate .
