What Causes Pain In Neck Area And Difficulty Swallowing?

Posted on Fri, 31 Oct 2014
Question: hi doctor. my future mother in law has been experiencing pain in her neck area and difficulty swallowing and speaking. her primary care physician in the province did an ultrasound and found multiple nodules in her thyroid. patient is a XXXXXXX already around 65 years old and very scared of surgery and anything invasive so she opted for acupuncture to hopefully help her. is this kind of complementary medicine practice beneficial for thyroid nodules? what kind of traditional specialist should we see for second opinion, endocrinologist or eent? or surgeon? if anything invasive is not an option for her due to personal reasons, what else can we do? is a biopsy a must do?

Brief Answer:
Need to know the ultrasound findings

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern.
we need to assess the functional status of thyroid and these nodules and any risk of malignancy. For this, we need to get the full ultrasound report. The pain and difficulty in neck could be part of inflammation in thyroid called a Thyroiditis. In most cases of thyroiditis, we see small nodules which usually disappear after certain period.

An endocrinologist is the best person to decide. He will guide you through. Not all nodules need surgery or any invasive procedures. It is extremely important to read the description of the ultrasound fiindings to decide further. A thyroid functon test is important too. Do you have a thyroid function test report and the ultrasoud report which you could attach to this question?

Acupunture may not help in thyroid nodules. I would ppreciate a reply
