What Causes Light Brown Discharge After Plan B Intake Followed By Unprotected Sex?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Jun 2014
Question: On gianvi birth control but I was sorta taking it inconsistently.. Had unprotected sex by accident may 3rd, took plan b may 4th therefore within 24 hours. Had no symptoms at all. Period was due for May 16th/17th but around this same time I had kind of a brown discharge. So two weeks after intercourse/taking plan b and 3-4 days after being late on my period, May 20th to be exact, I took two preg tests (1 home test, 1 at gynecologist) both negative. I wonder if the light bleeding/ brown discharge was my period since it occurred around when I usually should get my period? Also I am still bloated. Am I am now over 2 weeks late if the light bleeding didn't count as my period.

Brief Answer:
likely due to emergency contraception

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Emergency contraception is very effective especially if taken within 24 hours as you did.

Because it is hormonal medication it can cause disruption in the menstrual cycle though many women may not experience any effects. The disruption can vary from one to the next, it can involve (1) spotting, (2) early onset of menstrual bleeding (3)delayed period (4) cause in degree of menstrual flow

Pregnancy tests are accurate at picking up the HCG hormone produced during pregnancy. They can usually detect this hormone by day 11 to 14 after conception. Since the test were done on May 20th, 17 days after unprotected intercourse, it is likely that they were accurate and you are not pregnant.
If you wish to confirm this, you can repeat the test.

It is likely that the abnormal menstruation is due to the emergency contraception and your period should return to normal by the next cycle.

Though emergency contraception is very effective, it is not as effective as the regular use of oral contraception which is up to 99% effective.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
