What Causes Heavy Menstrual Bleeding?

default
Posted on Fri, 2 May 2014
Question: I am 47 and have not had a period since November. I am visiting friends on the opposite side of the country and started my period 3 days ago. I am having very heavy bleeding and clots. Soaking through tampons by the hour. I have a history of fibroids, had surgery in 2010. My friend are worried and think I should go to the hospital. I have no insurance, and don't think there is much that can be done. What's your opinion?

Brief Answer: Wait for a few more days... Detailed Answer: Hi, I have gone through your medical history carefully. If you did not have your periods since November; it is normal to have heavy bleeding now after 4 months. I advise to wait for few more days. If the periods won't stop within a week or you will get heavy bleeding, then, you should contact an OG specialist. Please bare in mind that you are going through menopause stage of life. It is normal to have such changes in your periods. However, regular check ups by OG specialist is advised to prevent other more serious health problems. For the time being, I advise to: - drink more fluids (especially water) - do not take aspirin, ibuprofen. Instead, can use mephenamic acid only for the pain - keep a good genital hygiene. Change the tampons frequently to avoid vaginal infection - eat more foods high in iron, folic acid and vit.B12 to prevent anemia. Hope it was of help!
