What Causes Heavy Menstrual Bleeding And Severe Abdominal Pain While On Primolut N?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Sep 2015
Question: My 13 year old daughter has been prescribed Primolut n ( 3 tablets a day for 10 days) for irregular periods (bleeding for 3 weeks or longer). She began her course last month and took them for the 10 days as advised. She stopped on the 10th day and got her period 3 days later. Her period is very heavy from day one, she has severe abdominal cramps, pain in her back passage, tugging/pulling sensation in her side, her head, arms and legs ache and she has nausea. The pain is severe, and non stop for the last 2 days since her period has started and she is unable to sleep with it or relieve it. Is this a normal reaction/occurrence.

Brief Answer:
Pain is not normal

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Heavy bleeding is a normal occurence after norethisterone intake. However, severe pain during menstruation is not a normal effect of this drug.Your daughter seem to suffer from congestive dysmenorrhea, which is due to increased blood supply to uterus, in conditions like fibroid, endometriosis or idiopathic( no cause found).
I would suggest you to give her mefenamic acid tablet to relieve her pain, and get her ultrasound done to confirm the diagnosis.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you both good health.
Regards
