What Causes Flatulence?

default
Posted on Wed, 25 Jun 2014
Question: Hi.
I emit a bad smell (faecal). My anus is wet on these occasions. I suffer from anxiety when in close contact with other people because of this. I have looked up various forums and noticed the prevalence of candida diagnosis' for other people suffering this. Could this be possible? Or could it be a metabolic issue with hormone problems? The smell definitely exists.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Good day.
Flatulence ( gas) emission is common and excess gas formation is due to a number of reasons.
What is your height and weight? Are you on any medications?

Do you have diabetes or Thyroid issues?

Gas formation in stomach is due to,

1) swallowing excess gas and intake of excess gas in the form of cola or fizzy drinks. Normally an individual swallow up to 1 litre of air in a day. This happens when we talk, when we eat and when we drink water. On the top of this, if we eat or drink in a hurry, we tend to swallow more air. Apart from this, when we drink aerated drinks, we are swallowing even more air. This excess air cause disturbance in digestion and has to come out any way via the back passage.

2) second mechanism of gas formation is during normal digestive process. Our intestine is several meters long and it takes several hours for food to pass from mouth to exit point. During this time, food undergo fermentation. Certain foods is hard to digest like pulsus ( chick peas , soya beans etc) and high fiber diet. Fatty food cause slowing of transit of food through intestine which cause indigestion and flatulence.

3) Some people has excess bacterial growth in intestine which can cause excess gas formation. This is common in diabetes. Apart from that, uncontrolled diabetes can cause slowing of intestinal movements which can also cause gas formation.

4) Lack of digestive juices from pancreas also cause gas formation.

5) anxiety can cause relaxation of anal sphincter and gas can easily escape then.

Certain drugs like Simethicon helps to absorb excess gas.

Few points to remember is that, eat a healthy diet, drink water slowly, avoid aerated drinks.
Do not eat food in a hurry.

Chew food properly when you eat and swallow slowly.
Avoid food which can increase wind formation. ( eg: fatty food)

Do not smoke.
Exercise and maintain healthy weight.

Regular daily bowel movements helps to reduce gas formation. Try to drink a full glass of warm water in the mornings as soon as you get up which will improve peristalsis.

Since your colonscopy was normal, not to worry.

Check your blood sugar levels and Thyroid function tests . No need to check any other hormones.

Thank you for the reply.

I am 5 ft 11 and 86kgs and I take no medication. I don't believe I have any thyroid or diabetes problems. I had jaundice as a newborn I don't know if this relates.

I don't believe the issue is just related to flatulence. As, on some occasions, the smell can be similar to a blocked drain. I can recall sitting at the barbers one morning as a teenager and the lady next to me spraying perfume at me because the smell was so bad.

Anxiety can relax the anal sphincter is there anything I can do to combat this? Can this be dietary related?Just as a further point - this happened for the first time when I was 15 and had consumed alcohol the weekend before.

I do not drink any fizzy drinks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Your weight is slightly on the higher side. Weight loss and exercise will surely improve your problem.

You may benefit with some probiotic ( fresh yogurt with live cultures) at least twice a day. Simethicone can help too. The wind smell so bad because of presence of sulfur in the gas.

Alcohol can certainly worsen this especially beer.

Your anxiety need to be controlled by relaxation exercise, meditation and you may also need an anti anxiety pill for 3-4 months. Unfortunately I can not suggest names of medicines in this forum as it is not legal. You may meet a psychologist/psychiatrist.

Thanks Dr.

Is something like candida overgrowth a myth?

I think this must be anxiety related because I have been active and fit and down to 75kg and I still had the issue. It is just very distressing to be this way at work and other anxious times.

I think I may have to see my doctor and ask to trial some meds for anxiety.

Thanks for your time.

Hello

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Good day.
It is well known that bacterial overgrowth in the intestine can cause bad odour and excess wind. This happens in low immunity and in diabetes etc. A course of antibiotics like Ciprofolaain for 2-3 days may help. I can not completely digest the candida theory and please do a thorough research before yoy try out these detox diet etc. Candida is present in all of us but our body keeps it from overgrowing. When our immunity comes down for any reason, candida can overgrow. Otherwise i can really think why shoud it grow in a normal healthy person.

Anxiety pills and medication can certainly help. Probiotics will help too.

Wish you good health and a happy week end
