What Causes Fever And Throat Pain?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Sep 2014
Question: My 7 year son is having fever around 100° F and pain in throat, started 11-Sep.-2014
Giving him 5Ml of calpol 250mg alongwith 5 Ml. Augmentin syrup. Should Lanzol junior be added? Please advise.
He had septicemia last month & fully recovered.
Is the treatment is correct? If it is viral, how much time it will take to subside? Also suggest any other medications are needed. I live in very remote area & no experience doctor here. His mid term exams underway.
Please help.

Brief Answer:
Gurgle with lukewarm water

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for posting on healthcaremagic. I have gone through the details provided by you and have two probabilities in mind. A bacterial condition called Strep throat is frequently seen. It generally subsidies on its own and irrespective of the use of antibiotics lasts for 5-7 days.
The other probable cause is a viral condition called infectious mononucleosis which also lasts for 5-10 days. Being a viral condition it does not respond to antibiotics and may rather have side effects like rashes if treated with amoxycillin. So in any case I would not have advised antibiotics but since you have started it,I insist that you complete the full course prescribed. There is nothing to worry. Gurgle with lukewarm water with or without disprin dispersible tablet to relieve pain. Continue calpol. Lanzol reduces gastric acid production which may be triggered by external medicines and may be given but is not essential.

Hope that helps. Feel free to revert back in case of further queries if any.

Above temps. taken axillary (armpit). His throat is far better but he is complaining about headache after ever 2-3 hour. Other vitals are stable, intake & output of fluids is on good notch.
Augmentin was prescribed by Dr. On relieving from hospital for 7 days. It was DDS but I cud not find double strength here so I started plain. For how many days it must be continued to complete the course.

Brief Answer:
Complete the 5 day course of antibiotic

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. I have gone through the details provided by you. It is good to hear that the child has been released from hospital. If you are giving Augmentin plain instead of DDS, you will have to give double the amount in each dose. Continue it for 5 days and see that the fever has subsided completely before you discontinue the medicine. For his throat, gurgle with lukewarm water should help. Give him plenty of fluids to drink and proper diet. That should help.

If you have been benefited by my answers, please care to leave a 5 star rating and a positive review. Wishing you and your family health.

Thank you sir... only the child was admitted to hospital last month for septicemia. Then he was released and dr. prescribed some medicines on discharge.
Now afer 1 month the fever occurred and because of his throat pain, I was worried and I started Augmentin as was prescribed earlier month and dr. also suggested to take the same prescription in case.
As I informed you that I live in a remote are and due to his exams I can't go to XXXXXXX much facilitated city, so I thout I might help to have an expert opinion.
I am very thankful for your kind advise and will be leaving 5 stars for sure only waiting for his full recovery till evening.

Brief Answer:
Augmentin is safe and the decision is ok

Detailed Answer:
I understood the situation. No need to worry. Augmentin is a good medicine and safe too. You have done nothing wrong in repeating the same medicines. Just wait for the recovery and I hope that it would be coming soon.
