What Causes Elevated Thyroid Level While On Inderal?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Sep 2017
Question: Hello - my mom is scheduled to undergo a surgery (hysterectomy and pelvic adjustment) in few days time and she has been undergoing medication for the past few weeks. She had elevated thyroid levels so she has been taking Inderal 10 & Neo-Mercazole 10. Her levels are in control based on tests performed few days ago, but now she has been advised to increase the dosage for Inderal and Neo-Mercazole to double (i.e. 20). I wanted to get another opinion if that is considered safe as against continuing this for a little longer. Can you please advise? Let me know if you need any further detail in answering this.

Brief Answer:
No rationale for increasing the dose

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand the concerns.
If the thyroid levels are normal with the previous dose of inderal and neomercazole, then there is no rationale of increasing the dose, as further suppression of thyroid by these drugs can lead to decreased thyroid hormone levels and hence hypothyroidism.
It will be more helpful for me to analyse the situation if you can upload the reports and the prescription paper in which the increase in dose have been advised.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Brief Answer:
TSH levels very low

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have reviewed the report.
The TSH levels are very low, and this is an indication that the dose of the antithyroid medications should be increased.
