Are Taking Sodium Valporate And Thyronorm Together Safe?

I am an unmarried girl of 26. I am having Femilon for PCOD and Sodium Valporate for Neurocysticercosis. I am also having Thyronorm for hypothyroidism? Do these drugs interact wid each other, if yes how? I am having vigorous hair fall since I have started Femilon? Why is it?

Hi,

It is important to always consult with a qualified healthcare provider before taking multiple medications together, as drug interactions can occur.

Regarding the medications you mentioned, sodium valproate is an antiepileptic drug used to treat various neurological conditions including seizures and migraines. Thyronorm is a medication used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Femilon is a combined oral contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy and manage PCOD.

There is a potential for interaction between sodium valproate and Thyronorm. Sodium valproate can increase the levels of thyroid-binding globulin (TBG), a protein that binds thyroid hormone in the bloodstream. This can increase total thyroid hormone levels, but not necessarily increase active thyroid hormone levels. In such cases, a healthcare provider may need to adjust the dose of Thyronorm.

Regarding the hair fall, Femilon may be causing hormonal changes that are affecting your hair. It is recommended to consult with your healthcare provider to investigate this further.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
