Posted on Mon, 16 Nov 2015
Question: Hi, my daughter is 2 months old and completely breastfed. From the birth she used to pass 20 stools per day. Later it has recovered after 45 days and passed only one stool per day yellow in color. Her one eye hasn't developed completely and having sticky, watery eye. So my ophthalmologist prescribed OXIPOD drops. After using this antibiotic course she started passing yellow watery stools. My paed gave her rotavirus vaccine even after mentioning this. The day after vaccination she had severe vomitings and stool has changed to green and sticky. Paed prescribed walamycin suspension antibiotic. I m concerned if another antibiotic cause any adverse effect on her. Should I use it or see for a few days of motion changes.

Brief Answer:
This seems like an antibiotic associated diarrhea - dont use antibiotic

Detailed Answer:
Hi....By what you quote this seems like an antibiotic associated diarrhea. I do not think this is related to the Rota viral vaccination.

She needs probiotics like - Econorm or G-Norm. DO NOT USE ANOTHER ANTIBIOTIC.

Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better. Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

There is no need to use antibiotics unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic associated diarrhoea.

I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your paediatrician).

Thank u. Initially when she had yellow watery stools we did stool test and the report says 6-8pus cells/hpf , semi solid, acidic, one plus reducing substance. But eventually it has got better and passed only one stool yellow solid. I m afraid that after using oxipod antibiotic has the problem again started or it's just diarrhoea due to antibiotic. Will my daughter becomes normal again? She is active passes urine normally.

Brief Answer:
Initial watery stools could be viral and now she will get better

Detailed Answer:
Hi...

1. The initial yellowish watery stools can be viral in origin.

2. The second episode of stools could be antibiotic associated diarrhea and that is the reason why I told not to use antibiotic again.

3. As I have suggested she requires only Probiotics and she will definitely get better. Do not worry if she is active and voiding urine normally.
