What Causes Black Blood Flow When On Implant?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Sep 2014
Question: Hi, I'm having black blood appear in my pants and am on the implant. I've been on this implant for two years period free and this is my fourth implant to date. Six weeks ago I had jet black watery blood for about 10 days and then it stopped but two days ago I noticed slightly thicker black/brown blood appear. Incredibly light, half a panty liner a day. I've been feeling sick and been very tired for nearly a month now as well throughout the day but not sure if this is related?

Brief Answer:
Need a specialist evaluation clinically.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

Your current history of seeing bleeding after no period for two years calls for a clinical evaluation by a specialist. Black blood implies collected old blood which has altered color.

Irregular bleeding is an early side effect of the implant. As the implant reaches almost its expiry, the hormonal effect can dwindle, especially if there is some weight gain as a result of the contraceptive use. This can result in breakthrough bleeding as the hormone requirement of the body becomes elevated.

Coagulation profile needs to be done and so is urinalysis and exclusion of infection any where in the body. A pregnancy test and a sonogram of the pelvis are also required.

If pregnancy can be excluded, bleeding may be arrested using styptics and hormone supplements if needed. Enzyme-inducing drugs also can cause such bleeding.

Hope your query has been answered. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.
