Brief Answer:
To make sure it is benign

Detailed Answer:
A biopsy of thyroid nodules or enlargements is typically planned to rule out cancer. The chances are generally small i.e. approximately 5%. However individual risks vary from person to person depending on findings on physical examination by the Doctor along with several other factors such as blood TSH level and ultrasound characteristics of the thyroid lumps.
