What Causes A Resting Heart Rate Of 50-55?

Posted on Thu, 16 Jun 2016
Question: Hi. I've recently realized that my resting heart rate is 50-.55. I don't feel dizzy or lightheaded. I have abit of cold symptoms and some pain in my left breast bone but it feels like a pulled muscle and it only hurts when I move my left arm in certain position. My heart rate will increase when walking or standing. Is this low heart rate any cause of concern?. Cause my resting heart rate was 60 plus two weeks ago. I notice it dropped during my menstrual cycle and it just ended but my heart rate is still quite low.

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that your heart rate is within the normal ranges.

The fact that your heart rate increases during physical activity is a normal physiological reaction of the body, caused by the activation of sympathetic nervous system from physical or emotional stress.

As long as you have no other symptoms, there is nothing to worry about!

So relax!

If in the future you will have any symptoms like dizziness, shortness of breath, etc., I would recommend a check up with your doctor coupled with some tests:

- a resting ECG
- thyroid hormone levels
- blood electrolytes.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

Is it normal that I have this pain in my left chest that comes and goes?
It started since I started having cold symptoms , I don't get breathless or anything other then having congested nose and sneezing . Am feeling bit tired but could be due to not having enough sleep.

I don't take regular meals , the pain feels more prominent when I am hungry ?
But it is sometimes prominent when i slouch in a certain manner for long and when i move my arm upwards it will be more prominent.

Sometimes when i push on the spot it hurts too .

Let me know if i should see a doctor or not ?

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

Thank you for the information provided!

Based on your symptoms I would explain that this chest pain could be related to two possible causes:

- musculo-skeletal pain and inflammation.
- gastro-esophageal reflux or gastritis.

I would recommend performing a chest X ray and inflammation tests (complete blood count, PCR, sedimentation rate).

A fibrogastroscopy may be needed to rule out/in possible gastro-esophageal reflux or gastritis.

Have you tried taking antiacids or PPIs (omeprazole, lansoprazole, etc.)? Have they relieved your pain? This would be indicative for possible gastritis or gastro-esophageal reflux.

From the other hand pain relief from acetaminophen or ibuprofen could indicate possible musculo-skeletal pain and inflammation.

I would recommend trying these drugs at home, in order to have a better idea on the nature of your pain.

Anyway, no one of this disorders is any serious cause of chest pain.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Best wishes,

Dr. Iliri
