Posted on Sat, 7 Jun 2014
Question: After reading the article about the broken needle in vein, I got the phobia for the share one.
Recently while I sallowing the fishbone or chicken bone, I imagine that those stuck to my GI system and get into my blood stream. or If I got wound or scractched by plastic or sharp metal, I think that the particles of plastc or metal got into my vein and could flow to the brain or heart and block the blood vessel.
Now I know it is very unrealistic and very hard to get into blood stream.
So Something happens related to sharpe one, I search for the scientic data or Doctor opinion.
But recently one odd thinking afflict me.
For example, While I sleeping , if someone give me the intravenous injection (and breaking the needle in vein) can I reconize it or cannot. While we sleeping, can I feel the pain and wake up or not.
is it possible for someone to shake or move needle in vein without pain or notice...
I read some article that vein is very weak so If needle moved or shaked in vein vein is easily teared or break so very dangerous.
I know it is very odd think and very unrealistic, would you pls. tell me that why it is unrealitic.... Thanks in advance

Brief Answer:
Due to internal layer, it causes pain

Detailed Answer:
HI
Thanks for using healthcare magic. I, Dr Abhishek Kapoor, would help you in this query.

Needle can break into vein, but it is very rare. Usually it is seen during dialysis or any procedure, which need high blood pressure. While during injection, due to body's protective mechanism, skin or muscle get contraction and it protect the body from broken needle. If any needle break, then they do not enter in the vein usually and they will get stuck under the skin , even if they break in the vein there is nothing to do surgically. But you have to watch for signs of infection at the site like redness , swelling , pain. Due to vein's internal layer (endothelium), it is not possible that needle could move inside without pain. In case, it is getting infected and need to be removed. Very rarely they will move from the vein toward the heart and it is impossible to move into brain due to size of vein and circulatory system.

In case, you have repetitive such thoughts, you should consult a psychiatrist. I think, you have specific phobia and in that case, you need antidepressant like paroxetine. It would help to control such thoughts and fear.

In case, you need further help, you can ask.

Brief Answer:
After sedation, it could possible

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Our skin and veins are extremely sensitive to pain. During sleep, pain sensation depends upon the depth of sleep. If any one is light sleeper, then this thing could not possible. At Moment, someone try to touch or try to insert needle in vein, person would be out of sleep. If any one is deep sleeper, then in deep sleeping, person would not able to get pain sensation. Usually, such kind of deep sleep is possible only after getting sedation. So, nothing to worry about this. Just stay relax and consult a psychiatrist for proper management.

In case, you have more query, you can ask.
