FNAC Test For Swollen Lymph Nodes Says There Is Suspision Of Granulomatous Etiology. What Does This Mean?

I was advised fnac test for swollen lymph nodes. The report is mentioned below:
"Multiple smears studied are cellular and show polymorphous population of lymphoids cells ranging from mature lymphocytes to transformed immunoblasts, centroblasts and centrocytes. Good number of pale histiocytes and endothelial cells seen. Occasional aggregates of epithelioid cells seen with multinucleate giant cells. The background is haemorrhagic with fibrous tissue fragments. No necrosis seen. No atypical cells seen in the smears studied.

Impression :
Reactive lymphadenitis - Left cervical lymphnode.

Note:
1. In view of occasional epithelioid cell aggregates and giant cells, there is suspision of granulomatous etiology."

What does this mean ? Does it suggest the I might be having some kind of cancer? Please
help me understand this.

Hi,

Firstly, you don't have to worry about cancer; this is not suggestive of Cancer! FNAC is an initial test done wherein the node would be subjected to aspiration and studied under slides. The report is most likely suggestive of your node reacting to an infection and swelled up. Because there were some more cells suggestive of a chronic condition, even that has been mentioned. But there is no evidence of any cancerous cells at all. Most likely the doctor will suggest you a biopsy and after the whole node is removed the correct diagnosis on the kind of infection could be elicited.

Sreenivasan
