What Are The Side Effects Of Prolonged Intake Of Premarin?

default
Posted on Fri, 3 Jun 2016
Question: My insurance company has indicated I must try anti-depressants and will NOT renew my 0.3 mg Premarin that I began taking at age 54 due to a partial hysterectomy performed to stop extremely heavy bleeding and pain during menestration(sp?) periods - at that time physician said I would be on this med during my entire life. However, have moved from area and haven't been able to reconnect to MD who did procedure. I have been doing well but am now 75 and insurance says no longer allowed and no longer appropriate. I am just a confident that "depression" is not and has not been part of any diagnosis. Otherwise am healthy and active -- do take 175 mcg synthroid for an ablated tyroid procedure after a potential cold nodule. Am doing well on that. May I just stop the premariin cold turkey?

Brief Answer:
I suggest that you stop Premarin now.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Health Care magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

Yes it is true that the available evidence does not recommend taking Premarin for such a long time. At this age it may put you at a very slight increased risk of developing clots in the veins or stroke. The risks of taking HRT at this age probably outweigh the benefits. So I suggest that you stop the HRT now.

The main concern at this age is that of osteoporosis. Discuss with your doctor and get a bone density scan (DEXA) done. Based on the results, you may need to take Bisphosphonates in addition to the calcium (I presume that you are taking calcium).

If you are healthy and active you do not need antidepressants. Eat healthy protein rich high fiber food.

Do include fresh fruits, vegetables and proteins in your diet. Make sure that you exercise daily. Yoga and meditation are also very beneficial.

I hope this is helpful.

Best wishes,
Dr Ramadevi Wani
