Question: what are the common causes of swelling in the ankles?
What could cause knee swelling and pain?
I ask these questions for my 80 years old mother.
Thank you! Please help her.

Hi, thank you for your question.

In your mother age the main concern will be swelling in the ankle due to fluid retention due to heart failure or kidney disease.
However if those are normal and she has pain in her ankles on walking then arthritis will be the most common cause.

The pain and swelling in her knee is most likely due to arthritis.

Simple x-ray of the painful knee and ankles in standing position can easily show if there is arthritis or not.
Following that treatment can be planned.
