Question: Dear Doctor

Can you please look at the following & suggest us the course of medicines:|

The patient is 51 years male; Thyroid symptom deducted in May 2011 and he started taking eltracin 100 mg as his TSH was over 100. Then he got his test done in October and the TSH remains the same. So the Dr. who was treating him for gatro issues, increased the dossage to 150 mg and he started taking it from 4 Nov. 2011 ; His TSH became normal in December 2011 (24 Dec.2011) however the T4 became high. Dr. advised him to reduce the dosage to 50 mg. from 25 Dec 2011. THe report recently taken showing TSH -15.63. Entrocrinologist suggested him eltrcn 100 mg and mecofol A twice a day. What are the side effects of taking mecafol a twice a day. he is feeling sore throat, dryness in mouth and also very lazy feeling throughout the day.

He is having gastro, hyper acidity & IBS problems too; and taking medicines for the same - viz. Pantacid 40 mg empty stomach mrg; unienzyem twice a day; digene gel if needed.

Pl advice.

Thanks

Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for the query and an elaborate history

1. What are the side effects of taking mecafol a twice a day?
A: Vitamin B 12 is usually non-toxic, even when taken in large doses. Even though the side effects are rarely noticed when vitamin B12 supplements are taken orally, but there are chances of few side effects occurring occasionally when injections are given mainly attributed to the preservatives in it. To mention a few - mild diarrhea, anxiety and panic attacks, palpitations, insomnia, skin rash, hives or itchy swollen skin, etc.

2. Most of the symptoms experienced by him are due to hypothyroidism. The common symptoms of hypothyroidism are fatigue and lethargy, cold sensitivity, dry skin, reduced memory, weight gain, hoarseness and joint aches.

My advice to him is to continue the Levothyroxine as prescribed by your endocrinologist and ensure that the thyroid levels are within normal limits.

Hope I have answered your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.
