Suggest Treatment For Vaginal Bleeding While On Mirena

Posted on Thu, 11 Aug 2016
Question: Hi! I've presently been on the mirena IUD for 3 weeks now. The insertion was tolerable and for the first 2 weeks the only real symptoms I had experienced was nothing but minor spotting and a cramp here and there. However on Sunday I noticed the bleeding was getting a little heavier, and by Tuesday it was period level heavy (there was clotting and I have been wearing tampons since). the cramping has been non stop since Monday and I'm essentially living off advil extra strength. I should also note that my period is only supposed to start next Friday if I wasn't on mirena.. I am in constant pain and am seeking any advice on what I should do? Is this normal when using iuds or should I seek a medical professional?

Brief Answer:
This is not typical after insertion - you need to be seen by the gynaecologist

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The IUD insertion is a relatively safe and easy procedure, but in some cases, there can be problems. If the IUD is not in the proper location, it can lead to extra spotting and cramping. This is easily evaluated with an ultrasound.

Also, if there are anatomic changes in the uterus, such as polyps, the IUD can make them bleed more easily.

Given that this has not been a typical experience (usually only minor cramping and spotting), then I would recommend that you call your doctor and make sure that they get you in for an ultrasound before the weekend.
