Question: We have a 4 year old grandson who has strep throat, an ear ache, massive diarehea, and dehydration. He when to the doctor and was prescribed an antibiotic. The troubling part is that his legs ache to the degree that he cries. It doesn't seem that leg aches would go with strep and an ear ache. Perhaps something else is in play.

Brief Answer:
ORS is the mainstay of treatment

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Most often the complaints of sore throat are either due to a bacteria called Streptococcus or certain other viruses. It does not always need to be treated with antibiotics but since the course has been started you must complete it. Gurgling with lukewarm water (if he can do it) should provide relief.

You need to give him ORS (oral rehydration solution) to make up for the fluid and salt loss which could have led to electrolyte imbalance.

About the leg pain, the location is important. If it involves the ends of the long bones, it is likely to be due to growth pain. In such a case giving paracetamol or acetaminophen should provide some relief. On the other hand if the pain is in the calf muscles, it could be due to electrolyte imbalance and giving juicy fruits like citrus fruits should provide relief. Calcium supplementation might also help.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
